General FAQs

Is Friends Academy a Quaker school?

Friends Academy is no longer a Quaker school, though we are proud of our Quaker heritage and retain the name “Friends,” along with a strong tradition of commitment to the importance of the individual child.

How long is the school day?

The school is open from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Except for Early Childhood half days and a few special occasions, classes start at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:05 p.m. Every Wednesday, classes end at 2:10 p.m. to allow for faculty meetings and professional development. Free supervision is available before school beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Afterschool Program begins at 3:05 and runs until 5:30 p.m.

There is a study hall available for all SBP students from 3:05-4:00.  It is proctored by an SBP faculty member who can guide students with their homework if need be.  In Middle School, there is also a study hall proctored by faculty members. 

What happens after school?

Friends Academy runs a fee-based After-School Program for all grades, from the end of the school day until 5:30 p.m. Throughout the school year, enrichment classes are also available for students. A few examples of these offerings include cooking classes, performance workshops, digital arts, woodworking, and sewing. In addition, students in grades six through eight may choose to become members of our competitive athletic teams, which involve practices and games both home and away. 

What do students wear?

The school’s dress code requires that all students be neat, clean, modestly and appropriately dressed. Our dress code is in place to help maintain a safe, respectful and positive learning environment.

What do Friends Academy students do for lunch?

All students bring morning snacks and lunches from home and eat in their homeroom classrooms with their teachers and friends. Each classroom is equipped with a microwave to heat food up. Every week, our Parent Association organizes pizza or subs to be delivered to the school. These lunchtime treats offer families the opportunity to purchase lunches for their children, while raising funds for the Parent Association. 

Do you offer transportation?

No. Parents and guardians are responsible for providing transportation for their own children to and from school each day. The school is happy, however, to assist with carpool arrangements by providing names and phone numbers of nearby families.

Admissions FAQs

What is Friends looking for in an applicant? What does Friends base its admission upon?

Friends Academy looks for students who are joyful, curious, and engaged learners. Children who are generous of heart and inclusive and compassionate friends will fit into our school seamlessly. Above all else, we want to make sure that the student will be academically and socially successful at Friends Academy. This is determined by a variety of factors that are explored during the admissions process: the visit to Friends, school transcript, and the teacher recommendation all help us to assertain if there is a good “fit.”

What if we missed the admission application deadline?

This is not a problem.  Please contact the Admissions Office and we will be happy to advise you.

Do you offer financial aid?

Yes. Friends Academy is committed to the socioeconomic diversity of its student body. Each year, approximately 30% of the student body receives financial assistance. The Financial Aid Committee awards grants to families demonstrating economic need based upon a review of their documentation submitted through School and Student Services (SSS) by NAIS

Will requesting financial aid affect my child’s chances to qualify as an applicant?

Applying for financial aid does not have an impact upon a student’s admission decision. The Admissions Committee meets first to make decisions on the candidacy of each applicant. Files of those students who qualify for admission are then sent to the Financial Aid Committee, if tuition assistance is needed. Notifications for both admissions and financial aid decisions are sent on March 10.
