How is Friends Academy’s campus used?

The outdoors is an integral part of the Friends Academy experience – from daily recess to outdoor classes to interscholastic athletics. Take a look at our campus map to explore the trails, fields, and more.

“We love the trails because we like to be outdoors, explore nature, and walk to the Stone Bridge.”

    Daily Recess

Every student has recess twice per day, when they can run and play on fields, playgrounds, and outdoor basketball courts.

  • A teacher leads Early Childhood students on a walk in the woods.

    Walks in the Woods

Students, teachers, and staff often take hikes in the woods along a mile of wooded trails and boardwalks.

    Science Experiments and Investigations

Science classes use campus as a natural laboratory for bird surveys, vernal pool explorations, and river water sampling.

  • Students hold sketches of the beech tree.

    Learning in the Outdoors

Beyond science, classes including art, literature, and PE frequently head outside for their studies – whether that’s collecting natural materials, group read-alouds in the grass, or soccer games on the upper field.

  • Two students plant seeds in the Friends Academy garden.

    Working Garden

All students spend some time working in the campus garden, where they help to grow and maintain vegetables to donate to local food pantries.

  • Students practicing on a grass field during PE class.

    Two Fields for Team Sports

Students, campers, and outside sports groups use the upper and lower athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and more.

  • Third grade students on the low ropes course.

    High and Low Ropes Courses

Deeper in the woods lie a low ropes course and a high ropes course. Both are used by students as well as outside groups for team building activities.

  • Two students take measurements along the Paskamanset River edge.

    Paskamanset River Edge

The Paskamanset River weaves along the campus’ northern edge, offering a variety of natural features for students to learn about science and the environment.
