FA Community Remembers Stephen Walach at Garden Service Event
When retired Middle School teacher Stephen Walach used to run the campus garden, he would be happy if only one volunteer showed up on a hot summer day. Last night, around 100 people — alumni, past and present faculty and staff, families, and friends — gathered at the garden under the July sun to remember Mr. Walach, who passed away in April.
Steve was an incredible English teacher who positively impacted so many students during his tenure at Friends. In addition, Steve tended to the garden every single day of the year. His passion turned it into a force for good for our community: he donated literal tons of fresh produce to local food banks each year.
“I remember the kind and gentle way he connected with kids, and helped them understand both the joy of gardening but also the social impact of caring for those who are food insecure in our region,” said Head of School Ben Kennedy. “People showed up for Steve. That was part of his magic, and why so many of us are here today.”
At the event on July 18, we unveiled a memorial garden bench with a dedication to Steve. Attendees reconnected with old friends and teachers, and many worked in the garden to honor Steve’s legacy to FA, the earth, and the greater community.
