Teacher Trainings & Workshops

Sally Borden Connect offers virtual trainings for educators on the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a highly effective intervention for reading and spelling. These trainings are open to teachers, administrators, tutors, and parents. Participants learn about dyslexia, dysgraphia, the science of reading, and fundamental elements of the Orton-Gillingham approach.

Classroom Educator Level

The 30-hour Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator Level course is for individuals who are looking for an introduction to the Orton-Gillingham approach. Participants include parents, administrators, and educators working in a classroom, small group, or one-on-one. Topics include:

• The background of dyslexia
• The history of Orton-Gillingham
• Phonological and phonemic awareness
• Phonics and spelling rules
• Syllable types and division
• Orton-Gillingham lesson planning
• Strategies for multi-sensory instruction

Classroom Educator level participants have the option to continue their formal Orton-Gillingham practice through working on a practicum with the OGA Fellows for an additional cost. This practicum will take place throughout the school year and prepare trainees to apply to the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators.

Associate Level

The intensive 70-hour Associate Level course was originally designed for people who work one-on-one with students although parents, administrators, and educators working in a classroom or small group are welcome to join. Topics include:

• The background of dyslexia
• The history of Orton-Gillingham
• Phonological and phonemic awareness
• Phonics and spelling rules
• Syllable types and division
• Orton-Gillingham lesson planning
• Strategies for multi-sensory instruction
• Vocabulary development
• Morphology and words derived from Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek
• Refining students’ writing skills of sentences, paragraphs, and essays
• Reading and interpreting a neuropsychological profile
• A mock tutoring session

This course has 60 hours of synchronous and 10 hours asynchronous work. Associate Level participants have the option to continue their formal Orton-Gillingham practice through working on a practicum with the OGA Fellows for an additional cost. This practicum will take place throughout the school year and prepare trainees to apply to the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators.
